So much of it exists here on Earth, that if you were to add up all the oceans on Earth together, it would weigh more than 10^18 tonnes, more massive than the biggest asteroid ever, and about as massive as Pluto\u2019s giant moon, Charon.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cawater-info.net\/all_about_water\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/Sunset-over-the-Pacific-Ocean-California-USA_web.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1548 colorbox-1544\" title=\"Sunset-over-the-Pacific-Ocean--California--USA_web\" src=\"http:\/\/www.cawater-info.net\/all_about_water\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/Sunset-over-the-Pacific-Ocean-California-USA_web.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.cawater-info.net\/all_about_water\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/Sunset-over-the-Pacific-Ocean-California-USA_web.jpg 600w, http:\/\/www.cawater-info.net\/all_about_water\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/Sunset-over-the-Pacific-Ocean-California-USA_web-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>But water only has a very small window in which it can be a liquid. For instance, if you took some warm water up to a very high elevation, it would start to boil, and become a gas! The higher up you took it, the lower and lower your boiling point would be.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cawater-info.net\/all_about_water\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/svp_boiling_point.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-1549 colorbox-1544\" title=\"svp_boiling_point\" src=\"http:\/\/www.cawater-info.net\/all_about_water\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/svp_boiling_point.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"557\" height=\"540\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.cawater-info.net\/all_about_water\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/svp_boiling_point.jpg 796w, http:\/\/www.cawater-info.net\/all_about_water\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/svp_boiling_point-300x290.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 557px) 100vw, 557px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Why? Because higher altitudes on Earth mean lower pressure. If there\u2019s not enough force pressing the water into a liquid phase, then there\u2019s no force binding the water molecules together. If you simply allow them to diffuse away, they will. And that\u2019s the definition of a gas, which is what you\u2019ll wind up with.<\/p>\n<p>On the other hand, water has no business being a liquid at low temperatures, either. You can see \u2014 from this diagram below \u2014 that if you start with liquid water, you can turn it into a gas by lowering the pressure, but you can also turn it into a solid by lowering the temperature.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cawater-info.net\/all_about_water\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/water-phase-diagram.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1550 colorbox-1544\" title=\"water-phase-diagram\" src=\"http:\/\/www.cawater-info.net\/all_about_water\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/water-phase-diagram.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"267\" height=\"250\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>So my question is this:<\/p>\n<p><em>If you took a glass of water into outer space, would the water freeze or would the water boil?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>This is a question that seems awfully tough, because in addition to knowing about water:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cawater-info.net\/all_about_water\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/glass_of_water1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1545 colorbox-1544\" title=\"glass_of_water1\" src=\"http:\/\/www.cawater-info.net\/all_about_water\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/glass_of_water1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.cawater-info.net\/all_about_water\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/glass_of_water1.jpg 500w, http:\/\/www.cawater-info.net\/all_about_water\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/glass_of_water1-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We also need to know about outer space. Space is a lot of things: cold, dark, and empty come to mind right away. And they come to mind, pretty much, as soon as you leave the Earth.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cawater-info.net\/all_about_water\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/space1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1547 colorbox-1544\" title=\"space1\" src=\"http:\/\/www.cawater-info.net\/all_about_water\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/space1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"550\" height=\"369\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.cawater-info.net\/all_about_water\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/space1.jpg 550w, http:\/\/www.cawater-info.net\/all_about_water\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/space1-300x201.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 550px) 100vw, 550px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Well, the temperature of space is, at its coldest, just the temperature of the leftover glow from the Big Bang. This radiation, known as the Cosmic Microwave Background, bathes the entire Universe in a temperature of only 2.7 Kelvin. That\u2019s less than 3 degrees above absolute zero, or -455 degrees Fahrenheit! But there\u2019s also \u2014 literally \u2014 no pressure in space. So, what happens? Who wins? Does the water freeze or boil?<\/p>\n<p>Oddly enough, the answer is <strong>first one<\/strong>, and <strong>then the other<\/strong>! It turns out that having a pressure vacuum will cause the water to boil almost instantly. In other words, the effect of boiling is much, much faster than the effect of freezing.<\/p>\n<p>But the story doesn\u2019t end there. Once the water has boiled, we now have some isolated water molecules in a gaseous state, but a very, very cold environment! These tiny water vapor droplets now immediately freeze (or, technically, desublimate), and become ice crystals.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cawater-info.net\/all_about_water\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/ice-crystal2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1546 colorbox-1544\" title=\"ice-crystal2\" src=\"http:\/\/www.cawater-info.net\/all_about_water\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/ice-crystal2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"288\" height=\"266\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We\u2019ve observed this before. According to astronaut observations, where they\u2019ve observed their urine get expelled from the ship:<\/p>\n<p><em>When the astronauts take a leak while on a mission and expel the result into space, it boils violently. The vapor then passes immediately into the solid state (a process known as desublimation), and you end up with a cloud of very fine crystals of frozen urine<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Sounds like it would be a fantastic thing to watch, doesn\u2019t it? Well, we\u2019ve done almost the same thing on Earth. And that\u2019s what happens to water in space.
