Zero Mass Water\u2019s device allows people to generate their own drinking water \u2014 even in arid regions.<\/em><\/p>\n

A start-up in Arizona has created an\u00a0at-home water-generating technologythat could be a breath of fresh air for\u00a0844 million people\u00a0who lack clean, safe drinking water around the world.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s because Zero Mass Water\u2019s rooftop system, already serving a few families and businesses in Arizona and California,\u00a0pulls water from the air\u00a0\u2014 no matter the climate or humidity level.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe want to guarantee access to safe drinking water for every person in the world and fundamentally change the human relationship to water,\u201d\u00a0Zero Mass Water founder Cody Friesen told Forbes.<\/p>\n

The company\u2019s hydropanels,\u00a0which resemble solar panels\u00a0and\u00a0contain absorbent membranes, can extract about 5 liters of water from the air every day.<\/p>\n

On sunny days when the panels are most effective,\u00a0the system can produce the equivalent of \u00a012 to 20 16.9 oz. bottles of water, which means the Zero Mass Water can both produce water and reduce plastic waste.<\/p>\n

According to the Zero Mass Water website,\u00a0the system \u201cis built to create and maintain the highest quality drinking water,\u201d and adheres to Environmental Protection Agency guidelines.<\/p>\n

“You take a breath of air and you own the air you breathe, and yet water has its own supply chain,”\u00a0Friesen told Mind Body Green.\u00a0“Our vision is perfect water for every person, in every place.”<\/p>\n

The system remains expensive \u2014\u00a0about $4500, including installation\u00a0\u2014 but Friesen\u00a0said the system pays for itself in five years because it eliminates the cost of bottled water for families who don\u2019t drink from the tap.<\/p>\n

The system could benefit communities with\u00a0contaminated water systemsbecause it is cheaper than replacing aging pipes that leach toxins into the water supply.<\/p>\n

Zero Mass Water\u2019s\u00a0product is the latest to hit the market,\u00a0but it is not the only tool that enables people to generate their own clean, drinking water.<\/p>\n

\u201cFog harvesting\u201d nets have helped communities extract water from humid air in regions\u00a0like the mountainous coasts of Chile and Peru\u00a0and scientists have recently developed a practical way of\u00a0extracting water in arid climates.These technologies,\u00a0which use solar heat and an absorbent material for trapping water,\u00a0can help people produce their own clean drinking supply in regions where water remains scarce.<\/p>\n
