When it\u2019s reliable and clean, people tend to take it for granted. When it\u2019s the opposite, it can become the crucial fact of a person\u2019s existence, something that, if left unaddressed, prevents anything else from happening.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cawater-info.net\/all_about_water\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/water-mexico-city.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6100 colorbox-6090\" src=\"http:\/\/www.cawater-info.net\/all_about_water\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/water-mexico-city.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"625\" height=\"415\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.cawater-info.net\/all_about_water\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/water-mexico-city.jpg 625w, http:\/\/www.cawater-info.net\/all_about_water\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/water-mexico-city-300x199.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 625px) 100vw, 625px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Roughly\u00a02 billion people\u00a0don&#8217;t have reliable sources of clean drinking water and\u00a0one child every minute\u00a0dies from preventable waterborne diarrheal disease.<\/p>\n<p>By 2050, demand for fresh water is expected to grow by more than 40% and around a quarter of the world\u2019s population will live in places where water resources are endangered,\u00a0according to the United Nations.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>But the management of water isn\u2019t always so vexed and, in many places, its delivery is a miracle of modern engineering.<\/p>\n<p>More than\u00a090% of New York\u2019s tap water\u00a0reaches the city through the sheer force of gravity as it courses downhill from upstate aquifers.<\/p>\n<p>Throughout the sprawling streets of Mexico City, buildings sit atop aquifers so depleted they\u2019re sinking into the Earth. That means that water sometimes fails to flow reliably to houses and\u00a0trucks have to bring water\u00a0to people out of reach of the municipal pipe system.<\/p>\n<p>In 2014, China completed one of the biggest engineering projects of all time to ship water\u00a0nearly 1,500 miles to Beijing, averting a water crisis that had loomed over the country for years.<\/p>\n<p>South Africa\u2019s capital Cape Town, meanwhile, could become the world\u2019s first city to run out of water.
