The bottled water industry is about as wasteful as they come. This\u00a0billion dollar industry\u00a0is taking something that is essentially free around the world, packaging it, and selling it for profit. And it gets worse.<\/em><\/p>\n

Nestl\u00e9 \u2014 the same company that brings you those delicious Toll House cookies \u2014 decided in May to\u00a0open a new plant\u00a0in the middle of the drought-stricken desert in Arizona.<\/p>\n

This decision has raised many concerns and questions, the most obvious being \u201chow can they bottle water in a desert?\u201d<\/p>\n

Many of the concerned groups are environmental activists. Nestle already faces\u00a0backlash from groups\u00a0angry about them bottling water in the San Bernardino Mountains, and a group in Oregon voted in favor of anti-bottling measures on a proposed anti-bottling measures.<\/p>\n

Additionally,\u00a0a petition\u00a0was started on Change.org calling Nestl\u00e9 Waters \u201cirresponsible and unsustainable,\u201d pointing out that Arizona has officially been in a drought for\u00a017 years.<\/p>\n

City officials concluded\u00a0that there will be enough water for both Pure Life and the city\u2019s tap, but environmentalists (and Global Citizens) aren\u2019t convinced.<\/p>\n

The bottled water industry is bad for the environment. Nearly 80 percent of plastic water bottles simply become litter in a landfill, creating\u00a02 million tonsof plastic bottle waste every year. Here are 10 things you might not know about the bottled water industry.<\/p>\n

  1. The\u00a0first case of bottled water\u00a0sold dates back to Boston, Massachusetts, in the 1760s. Mineral water was bottled and sold by a spa for therapeutic uses.<\/li>\n
  2. For the first time ever, bottled water sales are going to\u00a0surpass the sale of soda\u00a0in the US.<\/li>\n
  3. Global consumption of bottled water increases by\u00a010 percent every year. The slowest growth is in Europe, while the fastest growth is in North America.<\/li>\n
  4. The energy we waste bottling water would be enough to\u00a0power 190,000 homes.<\/li>\n
  5. Food & Water Watch\u00a0reported\u00a0that more than half of bottled water comes from the tap.<\/li>\n
  6. Bottled water is no safer than tap water. In fact,\u00a022 percent of bottled brands\u00a0tested contained chemicals at levels above state health limits in at least one sample.<\/li>\n
  7. It takes\u00a0three times more water\u00a0to produce a plastic water bottle than it does to fill one.<\/li>\n
  8. The amount of oil used to make a year’s worth of bottles could fill\u00a0one million cars\u00a0for a year.<\/li>\n
  9. Only\u00a0one in five plastic bottles\u00a0are recycled.<\/li>\n
  10. The bottled water industry made\u00a0$13 billion\u00a0in 2014, but it would only cost\u00a0$10 billion\u00a0to provide clean water to everyone in the world.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
