As humans, we\u00a0are composed\u00a0of approximately 70 percent\u00a0of the stuff and nearly every aspect of our body&#8217;s function\u00a0calls for\u00a0the fluid.\u00a0Water makes up much of the medium that helps our cells communicate with\u00a0each other. While it&#8217;s a fact we can only survive a few days at best without water,\u00a0is eight glasses\u00a0a day really necessary?\u00a0The answer\u00a0depends on many factors, including:\u00a0\u00a0<!--more--><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>What is the person&#8217;s general health status?\u00a0Patients with chronic pain need to seriously evaluate their water intake.\u00a0Clinically, patients have noticed improvements in treatments they were already pursuing, such as chiropractic work, acupuncture or massage, just by being better hydrated.<\/li>\n<li>Is the person doing activities that increase water loss (sweating)? Is the person working out extensively, or do they have a job that frequently puts them outside in the heat?<\/li>\n<li>Does the person drink a lot of coffee or soft drinks?\u00a0Coffee can act as a diuretic, which means it may increase urination.\u00a0\u201cA lot\u201d of coffee in this case would be defined as\u00a03 or more 6-ounce cups a day.\u00a0Regular or diet soft drinks pose many health issues.\u00a0Those drinking multiple cans of\u00a0pop a day may not be getting enough water.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>One of the biggest problems those who\u00a0drink\u00a0high volumes of coffee or soft drinks run into, is that those beverages eventually replace water as the daily form of hydration.\u00a0Again, coffee is a diuretic. So\u00a0excessive amounts of coffee\u00a0can actually worsen the water balance in\u00a0the body.\u00a0If this situation goes on long enough, patients\u00a0could encounter nagging pains that don\u2019t respond\u00a0to conventional therapy.<\/p>\n<p>The need for water is so great in the body that a physician wrote an entire\u00a0book on\u00a0how those with chronic neck and back pain need to consider the amount\u00a0they are getting [1].\u00a0High coffee intake could\u00a0also cause losses of minerals and calcium.\u00a0Everyone should\u00a0realize that hydration\u00a0can not come from any other source but water.<\/p>\n<p>There is very little data\u00a0on exactly how much water a person should drink,\u00a0however, the old suggestion of\u00a0eight glasses a day may still be a realistic\u00a0goal.\u00a0Athletes in\u00a0training\u00a0should target 80-90 ounces or more, depending on how much they are sweating.\u00a0If\u00a0urine\u00a0appears dark yellow, water intake needs to be increased.\u00a0The color of\u00a0urine should\u00a0typically be a pale yellow.\u00a0One study documented that even experienced long distance runners did\u00a0not always gauge\u00a0how dehydrated they\u00a0were [2]. Folks receiving bodywork therapies like massage or chiropractic treatments\u00a0should also be drinking higher amounts of water to best utilize those therapies.\u00a0Coffee drinkers need to limit their daily intake to 1-2 cups while\u00a0meeting their water goals for the day.<\/p>\n<p>What type of water is best?\u00a0These\u00a0days,\u00a0there is bottled water, flavored water, vitamin water and of course, tap water.\u00a0The best source\u00a0for drinking and cooking, is water filtered through a reverse osmosis system.\u00a0This is a very high grade filter that can be installed under your kitchen sink by a local water company.\u00a0Any other form of regular water, tap or bottled, is still better than a soda.\u00a0Vitamin and specialty waters can become a problem\u00a0due to added sugars.\u00a0Others promise extra vitamins when in fact they\u00a0contain very few.\u00a0In truth, water doesn&#8217;t need to provide anything other than water.\u00a0It&#8217;s important enough.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0boom of\u00a0bottled water, while it popularized\u00a0hydration,\u00a0also triggered a huge influx of plastic bottles being dumped into our environment, which allows\u00a0certain chemicals, like phthalates, to leech into the ground, water and\u00a0our bodies.\u00a0These\u00a0pose various risks including cancer.\u00a0Try to transport water in stainless steel or glass bottles.\u00a0If you have\u00a0plastic bottles,\u00a0don&#8217;t allow them\u00a0to sit in the sun. Also, don&#8217;t use plastic to carry or heat water, as\u00a0this might increase\u00a0chemical leeching.
