Scientists recently\u00a0used 20-year-old Voyager data\u00a0to find even more evidence that Europa has twice as much water as our planet.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Even tiny Pluto\u00a0may have an ocean\u00a0nearly as large as Earth&#8217;s.<\/p>\n<p>Steve Vance, a planetary scientist at NASA&#8217;s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, has kept a close eye on research about ocean worlds over the years.<\/p>\n<p>He has rounded up estimates of ice thickness and ocean depth throughout the solar system to calculate roughly how much water may exist.<\/p>\n<p>The graphic below uses Vance&#8217;s data and other sources to show the probable volume of liquid water on nine known ocean worlds, including Earth:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cawater-info.net\/all_about_water\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/earth-most-water-titan-europa.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-7029 colorbox-7028\" src=\"http:\/\/www.cawater-info.net\/all_about_water\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/earth-most-water-titan-europa.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"625\" height=\"826\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.cawater-info.net\/all_about_water\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/earth-most-water-titan-europa.jpg 625w, http:\/\/www.cawater-info.net\/all_about_water\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/earth-most-water-titan-europa-227x300.jpg 227w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 625px) 100vw, 625px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Amounts of water are shown in zettalitres (ZL), a unit that&#8217;s equal to 1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 litres or 1 billion cubic kilometres.<\/p>\n<p>Earth harbours about\u00a01.335 ZL of water, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.<\/p>\n<p>In order of how much liquid water each world is estimated to have (from least to most), the ranking is:\u00a0Enceladus,\u00a0Triton,\u00a0Dione,\u00a0Pluto,\u00a0Earth,\u00a0Europa,\u00a0Callisto,\u00a0Titan, and\u00a0Ganymede.<\/p>\n<p>Ganymede, the largest moon of Jupiter, is the wettest world in the solar system for another big reason: A staggering 69 percent of its total volume may be liquid water, which is more than any other on the list.<\/p>\n<p>Mimas, a moon of Saturn, and\u00a0Ceres, the largest asteroid in the solar system, might also have oceans. But scientists aren&#8217;t yet sure how big each one might be, if they exist at all. More space missions are required to find out.<\/p>\n<p>NASA is currently planning a mission to Europa to\u00a0map the icy moon\u00a0in unprecedented detail. The Europa Clipper is expected to launch between 2022 and 2025.<\/p>\n<p>The probe will hopefully give us a better estimate of the size of Europa&#8217;s ocean, and repeatedly &#8220;taste and sniff&#8221; water plumes spraying from its surface.<\/p>\n<p>The European Space Agency is planning a similar mission called the\u00a0Jupiter Icy Moons Explorer, which may launch in 2022 and reach Jupiter in 2030.<\/p>\n<p>That mission calls for two flybys of Europa and an 8-month orbit of\u00a0Ganymede.<\/p>\n<p>One of these robots could discover the first signs of alien life hundreds of millions of miles from Earth.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\">Source: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/earth-water-solar-system-comparison-moons-have-oceans-ice\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/<\/a><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Dear User\/Visitor!
