{"id":7108,"date":"2020-01-07T13:04:09","date_gmt":"2020-01-07T08:04:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.cawater-info.net\/all_about_water\/en\/?p=7108"},"modified":"2020-01-07T13:04:09","modified_gmt":"2020-01-07T08:04:09","slug":"in-a-totally-unexpected-finding-water-has-spontaneously-produced-hydrogen-peroxide","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.cawater-info.net\/all_about_water\/en\/?p=7108","title":{"rendered":"In a Totally Unexpected Finding, Water Has Spontaneously Produced Hydrogen Peroxide"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Water is a weird molecule, and no matter how many strange things about it we discover, it seems like there are always more unexpected surprises waiting around the corner \u2013 even after centuries of researching it.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cawater-info.net\/all_about_water\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/Water-Has-Spontaneously.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-7109 colorbox-7108\" src=\"http:\/\/www.cawater-info.net\/all_about_water\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/Water-Has-Spontaneously.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"625\" height=\"356\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.cawater-info.net\/all_about_water\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/Water-Has-Spontaneously.jpg 625w, http:\/\/www.cawater-info.net\/all_about_water\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/Water-Has-Spontaneously-300x171.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 625px) 100vw, 625px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Case in point: in a new study, scientists in the US have discovered that in the right circumstances, water can spontaneously produce hydrogen peroxide \u2013 a quirk of basic chemistry, hiding in plain sight, which somehow eluded our notice until now.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Water is one of the most commonly found materials, and it&#8217;s been studied for years and years and you would think that there was nothing more to learn about this molecule,&#8221;\u00a0says chemist Richard Zare\u00a0from Stanford University.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;But here&#8217;s yet another surprise.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>While the scientists observed the phenomenon taking place with pure water, not just any form of water will do.<\/p>\n<p>According to the team, the spontaneous production of hydrogen peroxide can occur when water is atomised into microdroplets: microscopic droplets of water measuring just 1 micrometre to 20 micrometres in diameter.<\/p>\n<p>One micrometre is just one thousandth of a millimetre, so we&#8217;re talking incredibly tiny droplets here. At such an infinitesimal scale, the spontaneous formation of hydrogen peroxide appears to take place \u2013 even in the absence of almost anything else other than water.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This process does not require any chemical reagent, catalyst, applied electric potential, or radiation,&#8221; the researchers write\u00a0in their new paper.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Only pure water in the form of microdroplets in air is necessary for the appearance of hydrogen peroxide.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>As it happens, the team discovered this surprising result by accident in previous research, investigating how\u00a0gold nanoparticles and nanowires\u00a0can be created using water droplets.<\/p>\n<p>Those experiments revealed water microdroplets not only accelerate the synthesis of the gold nanostructures, but also\u00a0cause their spontaneous formation.<\/p>\n<p>In the new research, Zare&#8217;s team ran a number of tests, including spraying pure water microdroplets onto a test strip that would only turn blue in the presence of hydrogen peroxide (it turned blue \u2013 see the\u00a0video\u00a0above).<\/p>\n<p>Another experiment revealed that hydrogen peroxide production yield was inversely proportional to microdroplet size; in other words, smaller microdroplets produce higher concentrations of the molecule.<\/p>\n<p>But why and how does this happen at all?<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s hard to know for sure, but the researchers speculate that spontaneous oxidation of water likely occurs due to a strong intrinsic electric field at the water\u2212air interface of microdroplets, where an electric field generates hydroxyl radicals that recombine into hydrogen peroxide.<\/p>\n<p>While it will take future research to test this hypothesis, the team says the production of hydrogen peroxide itself is unambiguous, and could lead to new and more environmentally sustainable ways of manufacturing this\u00a0common chemical.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We suggest that this discovery opens various innovative opportunities including green and inexpensive production of hydrogen peroxide, green chemical synthesis, safe cleaning, and food processing,&#8221;\u00a0the authors write.<\/p>\n<p>For Zare himself \u2013 an influential prize-winning chemist who holds no less than 11 honorary doctorates \u2013 the discovery is as significant as it is surprising.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I think it could be one of the most important things I&#8217;ve ever done,&#8221;\u00a0he says.<\/p>\n<p>The findings are reported in\u00a0PNAS.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\">Source:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/water-spontaneously-produces-hydrogen-peroxide-in-totally-unexpected-finding\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/<\/a><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Dear User\/Visitor!
