WORLD WETLANDS DAY IN KAZAKHSTAN

2 February 1997 contracting parties of Ramsar Convention convention on wetlands of international significance agreed to declare 2 February the World Wetlands Day. This is the 10th Wetland Day and on May 2 of this year Ramsar Convention will enter into force in the territory of Kazakhstan, CARNet press service reported.

Wetlands Day is marked to draw attention of the world community to problems and value of this unique and important ecosystem. Kazakhstan has become the 154th signing party of the Convention and nominated water basins of Irgiz Turgay interstream area and Tengiz Korgalzhyn lake system for the status of Ramsar Wetland of world significance. These are unique sites having great importance not only for water fowls but also other kinds of flora and fauna.

Joining Ramsar Convention, Kazakhstan has taken responsibility before the world community for conservation of wetlands that are to be entered in Ramsar list. Currently a number of project are being implemented on conservation of main wetlands of Kazakhstan, giving certain environmental status to them and development of plans for socio-economic development of regions on the principles of sustainability.

A. ISABEKOV: IT IS NECESSARY TO GET THE PARLIAMENTS APPROVAL ON NUMEROUS LAWS FOR ATTRACTING INVESTORS IN CONSTRUCTION OF KAMBARATA HYDROELECTRIC POWER STATION

Prime Minister of Kyrgyzstan Azim Isabekov conducted a meeting devoted to issues of power engineering.

A.Isabekov said the meeting is initiated to consider urgent problems in the field of power engineering. “The government should get soonest approval of corresponding laws in the parliament in order to attract investors for construction of new hydroelectric power stations Kambarata-1 and Kambarata-2”, - said the head of government.

Participants of the meeting discussed concrete measures, which are necessary for recovering energy sector of the republic and supported the idea on setting up a separate ministry of energy and fuel resources.

Azim Isabekov has ordered to work out a program on development of energy sector of the republic under conditions of accepting necessary laws as well as start a work on preparing another meeting of the government devoted this subject.
