DRINKING WATER PLANT TO BE BUILT IN CAPITAL CITY OF TURKMENISTAN'S NORTHERN PROVINCE
Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdymukhammedov signed a decree approving the decision of the interdepartmental tender commission on declaring Turkish company SEHIL Insaat Endustri ve Ticaret Limited Sirketi the winner of the international tender for design and construction of a drinking water plant in the town of Dashoguz. As the Ashgabat correspondent of Turkmenistan.ru reports referring to the press-service of the head of state, the plant is designed "with a view of fulfilling the task on ensuring uninterrupted supply of quality drinking water to the population of the town of Dashoguz."
In accordance with the decree, the governor of Dashoguz province is authorized to sign a contract with the winner-company for the design and construction of the drinking water plant with the capacity of 150 thousand cubic meters per day in the town of Dashogyz. The cost of the project is US $ 27,990,723 million. Under the contract, the construction should start in February 2007. The facility should be commissioned in October 2008.

ALMATY DISCUSSES SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT ISSUES OF ILI-BALKHASH BASIN
13 February 2007 CA Regional Environmental Center held the workshop “Subject and Economic Mechanisms of Cooperation for Sustainable Development of Ili-Balkhash Basin”, which brought together representatives of government and public organizations of Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan Institute of Strategic Studies, Corporation "Kazakhmys” and a company “KEGOK”, as well as international and scientific organizations, CARNet press service reported.
Participants of workshop have discussed subjects and directions for mutually beneficial cooperation supporting sustainable development objectives in the basin such as: development of small HPS and transport communications, including rehabilitation of shipping on the Ili river, environmental tourism and conservation of biodiversity, production of environmentally sound food. These and other areas according to the Concept of Sustainable Ili-Balkhash Basin Development meet the long-term economic, social and environmental needs of population, state and environment.
During the discussion in working groups recommendations to support prospective areas of regional development were developed including organizational, legal, financial and economic mechanisms of interstate and cross-cutting integration.
Basin of Balkhash Lake and Ili River, located in south-east of Kazakhstan and north-west of China, is considered as a unique natural site and is one of the biggest lake ecosystem on Earth, which is bigger than many states in size. The fifth part of Kazakhstan’s population lives in the Basin area.
The workshop was initiated within the EC and CAREC project aimed at integration of ecosystem management model in IBB to conserve ecosystem, integrate water and sustainable nature management.
This model will be based on long-term interests of all stakeholders including China and Kyrgyzstan and provides for creation of favourable conditions for sustainable development activities.
Implementation of projects according to authors will enable to prevent continuing depletion of ecosystems and irrational use of resources and the gained experience can be used in other river basins of Kazakhstans and Central Asia.

MINISTRY OF AGRICULTURE DISCUSSES THE PRIORITY AREAS OF ENVIRONMENT
Workshop to discuss projects of sectoral strategies on priority areas of environment took place in Dushanbe. Workshop was held with support and participation of the RT Ministry of Agriculture and Environment. OSCE Center in Dushanbe, Task Force of the Aarhus Center and heads of a range of public organizations (NGO).
During workshop discussion of projects of sectoral strategies took place on such priority areas of environment as waste management, water pollution, rehabilitation of environmental monitoring system, draft law “On Protection of Environment”. According to information received by CARNet press service participants of workshop proposed supplement strategies project with taking due account of received recommendations and proposals.

INTERNATIONAL ECOLOGICAL ORGANIZATION LIKELY TO BE FORMED IN ASTANA
During the presentation of the Concept of Kazakhstan’s transit to the stable development for 2007-2024 Kazakh Minister of Environmental Protection Nurlan Iskakov informed of the plans on creation of an international ecological organization.
“Foreign Affairs Ministry supported the initiatives on holding the sittings of the ecology ministers of European and Asian-Pacific regions in 2008 and 2010. According to the concept we will make efforts on creation of an international ecological organization with its headquarter in Astana. The more so as Astana will conduct the summit on stable development in 2012”, Mr. Iskakov noted.
Besides, he emphasized that sustainable development of the states was a basis of the national idea on prosperity, preservation of nature, culture, health and well-being of every Kazakhstani citizen.
