Summary:

Objectives: to develop a set of measures on water use improvement in rice fields through rational irrigation scheduling, rational rice irrigation technique and technology, optimal rates and schedule of leaching, and water, temperature, and salt regimes management. Natural and economic characteristics of given plot are typical for 60% of rice area in midstream of the SyrDarya river. Climate is sharply continental. Relief is smooth. Soil texture shows loam and sandy loam followed by fine silty sands. Water table is 0,5-1,0 m (during growing period) and 1-2 m (autumn and winter period). Groundwater salinity is 1-5 g/1, while chemical composition is sulphate-chlorid. Irrigation system includes on-farm concrete coated distribution canal and earthern canals with specific length of 30 m/ha and efficiency of 0,51. The plot is equipped with open-channel drainage. Drainage depth is 1-1,5 m, while drain spacing is 300-400 m, and specific length of drainage is 30-40 m/ha. As a result a set of measures on irrigation improvement in rice fields was developed. This set of measures provides high cost-effectiveness of agricultural production and effective water and land resources use. Implementation of such measures made it possible to increase rice yield by 1-2 t/ha under irrigation norm of 24-26 thousands m3/ha. That is 1.5-2-fold less than current norms. Considerable improvement of water use efficiency led to favorable changes in environmental and reclamation conditions of the area.
